If your car's air conditioning isn't blowing cold and you've been putting off the repair because of cost, there's a program you need to know about. California's Cool Air Rebate (CAR) Program pays up to 90% of qualifying AC repair costs — up to $1,500 — for eligible residents. Cooks Auto Repair is a participating service center, which means we can help you take advantage of this program right here in Sacramento.
The program is funded through unclaimed deposits on cans of R-134a refrigerant sold in California, administered in coordination with the Car Care Council and the California Air Resources Board. It's a real program with real money available — and the application process is simpler than you might expect.

What Is the Cool Air Rebate Program?
The Cool Air Rebate Program provides financial assistance to eligible Californians to repair leaking AC systems that use R-134a refrigerant. Leaking AC refrigerant contributes to air pollution and poor air quality — fixing these leaks is both an environmental and public health priority, which is why the state has funding set aside to help pay for it.
If your vehicle qualifies, the program pays 90% of the repair cost, with a maximum reimbursement of $1,500. You are responsible for the remaining 10%, paid directly to the repair shop. The diagnostic test fee is covered 100% if qualifying repairs are performed.

Cooks Auto Repair Is a Participating Shop
As a participating Cool Air Rebate service center, we handle the program paperwork on our end and work directly with the program administrators. You bring your approval letter, we take care of the diagnostic test, and if your vehicle qualifies, we complete the repair — with up to 90% of the cost covered before you leave.
We diagnose before we repair. If your system has a leak, we find it, tell you exactly what it will cost, and let you decide how to proceed — including applying for this program. No pressure, no surprises.
Common Questions
Does my car have to use R-134a refrigerant?
Yes. The program specifically covers vehicles with leaking R-134a refrigerant systems. Newer vehicles (2020 and later) often use a different refrigerant (R-1234yf) and are not currently covered. Call us and we can tell you which refrigerant your vehicle uses.
What if there are no participating shops near me?
Check the shop locator at coolairrebate.org regularly — availability is updated as new shops join. Cooks Auto Repair serves Sacramento and surrounding communities. If your approval letter expires while you wait, you can request an extension by emailing info@coolairrebate.org.
Can I add a second vehicle to my application?
Yes. You do not need to submit a new application. Simply email info@coolairrebate.org and ask to add the additional vehicle.
What if my repair costs more than $1,666.70?
The program has a maximum reimbursement of $1,500 (90% of $1,666.70). Any repair cost above that amount is your responsibility. We will always provide you with a written estimate before any work begins.
